Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) recovery teams were overnight repairing the rail line east of Broken Hill, which was closed yesterday following the derailment of a wagon on a ballast carrying train.
The derailment, which occurred at 0430 CST Wednesday, closed the east-west line five kilometres east of Broken Hill.
Damage to the line included breaks, which are being repaired by welding teams and later today some 580 sleepers will be replaced.
It is anticipated the line will reopen around 1800 CST, Friday, April 13.
The line closure saw yesterday’s Indian Pacific passenger train rerouted via Melbourne while two freight trains have been held, one at Broken Hill and the other at Menindee.
The line closure is having minimal impact on national east-west rail freight services.
