ARTC Pilots Innovative New Mentoring Program For Rail Industry

To meet future challenges from the ongoing business expansion of Australian Rail Track Corporation Ltd, ARTC is to introduce an innovative mentoring programme for employees across its national network based on developing leadership skills and staff careers.

ARTC’s new mentoring programme acknowledges the value of the effort and achievements of its employees but recognises that future creativity, innovation and success of ARTC rests on the development of imagination, knowledge and drive of its employees.

ARTC achievements in recent times include exceeding the monthly and daily records in export coal tonnage carried in the Hunter valley, its work teams having scored major track maintenance awards and a nine per cent increase in freight volumes carried on its East West network.

ARTC is seeking ARTC staff for its mentoring program who are committed to ARTC company values of surpassing customer expectations, managing safety, continuously improving honesty and integrity and the open sharing of information. Mentorees should be able to demonstrate they are adaptable, have good judgement and initiative and interpersonal skills.

The ARTC pilot programme is jointly funded by ARTC and the Transport and Logistics Centre (TALC) and Australasian Railway Association (ARA) and will commence in May 2006 and run for 12 months. There are high expectations of the programme both internally and within the rail industry.

Twelve mentors from the broader commercial business community are being asked to volunteer their services to fill these important roles as mentors to emerging leaders across the whole breadth of positions within ARTC. A further twelve mentors will be provided from within ARTC.

ARTC will provide funding for training and accommodation and travel.

It is anticipated a commitment of several hours a month will be needed from mentors covering the broad range of ARTC positions such as accountants, engineers, managers, human resource managers aimed at sharing their knowledge and breadth  of experience in their field.

“The mentoring and contact can take place either face to face or long distance, and from and to any place in our network. It may mean that someone in Melbourne , Adelaide or Wagga for example, is mentoring someone in Ivanhoe, Narrabri or Port Augusta.” Jenny McAuliffe ARTC Manager Human Resources and member of the ARA Rail Skills and Careers Council.” said today.

ARTC since take up of the NSW Lease in September 2004 has expanded its workforce to include 1200 SRA and RIC secondees in NSW. The mentoring programme is intended to cover the entire ARTC workforce, including secondees across all parts of NSW, Victoria and South Australia .

“ARTC sees mentoring and development of career paths within the rail and broader transport logistics industry as vital to the continued growth of the rail transport industry. It fits perfectly with our current $1.4 billion investment in the upgrade and enhancement of rail infrastructure on the North South Corridor from Melbourne – Sydney-Brisbane.” ARTC CEO David Marchant said

Expressions of interest are being called for mentors from the broader community through applications to the Mentor Program leader Prue Hodgson at ARTC at phodgson@artc.com.au on 02 6939 5415.
