Australian Rail Track Corporation has continued the drive to deliver reliable and efficient rail infrastructure with the commencement of a steel resleepering project between Tarana and Orange in NSW.
Over 73,000 steel sleepers will be laid from Tarana to Orange between November and May 2009. The sleepers, provided by Onesteel in South Australia, will be stacked along the rail corridor in bundles of 10 as they await insertion.
The project follows the successful laying of 32,000 steel sleepers between Tarana and Bathurst.
Australian Rail Track Corporation CEO, David Marchant said the consistency the new steel sleepers will provide will lead to increased efficiency on the rail corridor.
“Consistency in rail sleepers may not sound significant,” Mr Marchant said, “but it means better efficiency from the track and reduced transit times between Tarana and Orange.”
Mr Marchant explained that for ARTC the continued investment in the rail corridor marks a resurgence in freight rail.
“Through infrastructure projects such as this, rail will be more than competitive again on our major transport corridors. Importantly, as each 1500 metre long train can replace 100 semi trailers we could see less trucks on our major roads,” Mr Marchant said.
