Rail works to get underway in Victoria, improving safety and reliability

  • Maintenance and drainage work at South Dynon between August 6th and 26th
  • Routine annual three-day shutdown to occur between September 3rd and September 5th
  • Passenger services will be replaced by coaches for all or part of their journeys during works

The Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) will be carrying out essential rail maintenance and enhancement works in Victoria, with two separate works projects taking place over the next five weeks.

Works to renew the track and undertake drainage works will occur in the South Dynon area from August 6th until August 26th, improving reliability for V-Line passenger rail services travelling on the north east rail line to Albury.

ARTC will then carry out annual maintenance program works between September 3rd and September 5th, helping to maintain a high standard of reliability across our network.

V/Line and NSW TrainLink XPT passenger train services between Melbourne and Albury will run as coaches while works are undertaken – passengers are encouraged to check the V/Line and Transport for NSW websites for service disruptions.

Wherever possible ARTC uses these network shutdown periods to carry out all major works in a local rail corridor, minimising the impact to passenger train services.

However, in this instance, the multiple work locations and the availability of maintenance equipment means ARTC has been unable to complete the South Dynon and our maintenance program works within the same period.

Costas Kokkoni, ARTC General Manager Asset Maintenance Services – Interstate Network – said:

“These works will bring long term benefits and improvements for passenger rail services between Melbourne and Albury,” Mr Kokkoni said.

“The maintenance program and other urgent works requires track closures to allow access to the tracks for works that cannot be done safely when trains are running.

“ARTC has made every effort to minimise impacts to services and we thank the community for its patience while these critical, long-term improvements are underway.

More information about the impacts to passenger services and replacement coaches in Victoria can be found at www.vline.com.au/Timetables/Service-changes or www.transportnsw.info/regional for NSW TrainLink services.

More information about upcoming works is available on the ARTC website. Community members can also contact ARTC Enviroline on 1300 550 402 or email enviroline@artc.com.au if they have questions.
