New level crossing technology trial underway

To test technology designed to improve level crossing safety, a new Rail Active Crossing System (RAXS) is being trialled on our network in NSW.

We’ve partnered with Transport for NSW and Rail Safety Systems on the initiative – launched yesterday at the Callaghans Lane level crossing near Quirindi – which aims to enhance safety at rural and remote level crossings by converting passive sites into active ones with train-activated flashing lights and warning signs.

The technology incorporates instructional message boards requesting drivers to “Stop on Red Signal”, accompanied by flashing lights and bells when trains approach. Cameras have also been set up to monitor driver behaviour during the trial, which will conclude by mid-2026.

The project has been funded with $715,000 from the NSW Government and $500,000 from the Australian Government’s Regional Australia Level Crossing Safety Program.

The modular, solar-powered system uses wireless train detection to trigger flashing lights, bells and clear warning signs – converting a passive crossing into a fully active one.
