Vegetation management goes hi-tech

Clearing hazardous vegetation around electricity lines along the rail corridor helps keep people safe from bushfire risks, but with thick weed growth and terrain that can be difficult to access, it’s not always an easy task!

In the Pyrenees region of Victoria and through Great Western, we’ve been using modern technology to get the job done safely and with impressive results.

“One of the standout tools in our arsenal are mechanical mulchers. These machines rapidly process overgrown vegetation into mulch, reducing fuel loads while also minimising environmental impact and inhibiting regrowth,” said Anne McLean, ARTC Environmental Business Partner.

The remote-controlled mulchers provide work crews with the ability to safely access hard to reach areas, including steep terrain: “By integrating this cutting-edge technology with strategic planning, we’re not only ensuring compliance with safety regulations, but also enhancing the resilience of rail infrastructure during bushfire season,” said Anne.
