Infrastructure Investment

Construction has started on the Narrabri to North Star section of ARTC's Inland Rail project.

When it comes to ARTC’s growing rail network, there’s plenty happening across Australia from planning, design and construction through to operations and maintenance.

Here’s an update on some of our major rail infrastructure projects that are enhancing our network for customers, while creating jobs and supporting local businesses and communities around the country:

Inland Rail (VIC, NSW, QLD): We’ve commenced construction on the Narrabri to North Star section in NSW – the second of 13 individual projects across three states – which will see the upgrade of existing rail corridor and the construction of new track near Moree. Learn more.

Botany Rail Duplication & Cabramatta Loop Project (NSW): We’re working through the tender process for both projects and will soon select a main design and construction contractor. Learn more about the Botany Rail Duplication and Cabramatta Loop Project.

North East Rail Line (VIC): We’ve completed main track works on our North East Rail Line upgrade in north-east Victoria, which will help ensure a smoother ride for passengers and fewer delays between Albury-Wodonga and Melbourne. Learn more.

Southern Highlands Overtaking Opportunities (NSW): Tenders for the project – which will enable freight trains up to 1,800m long to be overtaken by faster services – are expected to be issued later this year, with construction likely to commence in mid-2022.

Narrabri to Turrawan Line Upgrade (NSW): Will help boost efficiency and freight volumes between Inland Rail and the Hunter Valley. Tenders for the project are expected to be issued in the second half of this year, with construction likely to commence in mid-2022.

Mount Murray Loop Extension Project (NSW): We recently completed this project – extending the 764m rail loop to accommodate longer trains up to 1km in length. Watch.

Muswellbrook Bridge Replacement Project (NSW): Since commencing last year, works continue to replace three old bridges – the Hunter River, Muscle Creek and Bridge Street bridges – to ensure a safe and reliable rail network. Learn more.

Adelaide to Tarcoola Rerailing Project (SA): Having upgraded 600km of track to improve the capability of the line in support of intermodal freight, we’ve been focusing on close-out works this year, including replacing the Gawler River Bridge. Learn more.
