Australian Rail Track Corporation 2012 Annual Report - page 12

our people and our colleagues. Investigations
continue into the accident at Haig which is
around 450 kilometres east of Kalgoorlie on
the Nullabor Plain.
As a Company that operates across many
states and jurisdictions, we are also looking
forward to working closely with the new
National Rail Safety Regulator which
commences from 1 January 2013.
People and Culture
A major organisational restructure delivered
at the beginning of this financial year has
now established two autonomous business
units – the Hunter Valley network and the
Interstate network. This has helped drive a
commercially focused culture that recognises
the very different markets and customers
served by ARTC.
Despite these differences, a recently
completed review of the way we undertake
our asset maintenance activities will lead to a
new structure and delivery model which will
see greater consistency in the way we carry
out maintenance across the Company.
From December 2012 we will be under-
taking a greater range of maintenance
functions in-house, allowing us to take
better control of asset condition and the
ability to respond to incidents quickly
when they occur. We thank our Alliance
partners Downer Australia and Transfield
Services for the quality of their work over
many years providing services to ARTC.
We also recognise the efforts and
professionalism of our management team and
employees who supported our disengagement
from the NSWCountry Rail Network at
midnight, 14 January 2012, following six years
of providing network services. The transfer to
the new contractor occurred seamlessly.
Outlook
In the coming year we will continue our work
to transform the Company and to work with
our customers to grow the volume of freight
moving on the network.
We will be working hard within the Company
to increase our focus on sustainability and
the community. Recognising the role we
play in many regional and suburban areas
throughout the country, we will be looking
to strengthen our relationship with residents
that live alongside our network.
We know that Australians are increasingly
concerned about the environmental and
safety impacts of heavy trucks on the roads.
It is important for ARTC to have stronger ties
