INTERSTATE
ARTC TAKE UP OF THE
METROPOLITAN FREIGHT NETWORK
Objective:
Integration of metropolitan
freight network with the SSFL and ARTC’s
main Sydney-Melbourne rail line.
Benefits:
Rail operators only need to
interface with one network control for their
journey fromMelbourne and southern NSW
to Chullora and Port Botany.
Status:
Effective August 2012.
$172 MILLION PORT BOTANY
RAIL LINE PROJECT
Objective:
Improve capacity and efficiency
of the MFN and the Port Botany rail line to
support increasing volumes on rail.
Benefits:
Centralised network control
from ARTC’s Network Control Centre
South, with capacity for 36 freight trains
per direction per day to/from Port Botany.
Status:
Stage 1 complete; Stage 2 on
track to be completed in mid 2014.
$1 BILLION SSFL
Objective:
Create a dedicated freight line
to separate freight from passenger services.
Benefits:
Freight train peak period
curfew eliminated with resulting reliability
improvements and additional train arrival/
departure opportunities.
Status:
On track for completion in early 2013.
$1.1 BILLION NORTHERN SYDNEY
FREIGHT CORRIDOR UPGRADE
(Joint funded between the Federal and
NSW Governments and delivered by the
NSW Government and ARTC):
Objective:
Improved capacity between
Sydney and Newcastle to support growth
on rail and complement ARTC’s $2.5 billion
investment in the Melbourne-Sydney-
Brisbane corridor.
Status:
Hexham Loop (delivered by
ARTC) completed June 2012. Remainder of
projects due for completion by mid 2016.
$134 MILLION BALLAST
REHABILITATION PROGRAM
Objective:
Restore normal speeds on the
track between Melbourne and Sydney.
Status:
On track for the majority to be
completed by mid 2013.
