Australian Rail Track Corporation 2012 Annual Report - page 36

ARTC is proud of its committed, skilled and
innovative workforce who work hard to
help us meet our corporate objectives and
support our values of customer service,
safety, continuous improvement, integrity
and open and honest communication with
all stakeholders.
That is why as part of the restructure in
early 2011, a much greater focus on our
people and culture was supported by the
strengthening of our People, Culture and
Development team.
In the first half of the financial year,
the Chief Executive Officer and senior

executives undertook a series of
workshops across ARTC’s work locations
which involved the majority of ARTC’s
employees. The aim was to work towards
engaging our people in the corporate
vision, objectives, challenges and to better
understand the major issues impacting
across all levels and work responsibilities.
The feedback received following the
workshops was extremely positive and
the CEO workshop series will become a
regular ARTC event.
In response to a need to ensure our people
have clear and measurable indicators of
success we undertook a review of ARTC’s
performance management system.
The systemwas improved to include a greater
focus on the identification and assessment
of the behavioural characteristics expected
of ARTC’s employees.
This includes, for example, the required
demonstrated behaviours of managers in
terms of how they relate to and encourage
their teammembers to deliver on work
outcomes, and the expected interaction of
individual teams and how they work as a
group on a day-to-day basis.
OUR
CULTURE
During the year ARTC undertook a number
of initiatives to assist in the development
of our work culture. Of particular note was
a major work health and safety campaign
which was designed to include the family
members of our employees. This included
a children’s colouring-in competition with
a safety theme and safety calendars sent
to employees’ homes. Relatively simple
initiatives, but feedback strongly indicated
that families are nowmuch more aware that
work safety is a shared responsibility that
needs to be reinforced at home and at work.
An employee safety blog was also launched
to help encourage free discussion about
safety issues and ideas and an awareness
campaign around fatigue was also
successfully implemented.
ARTC RECOGNISES THE LINK BETWEEN AN
ENGAGED AND MOTIVATED WORKFORCE
AND A HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL COMPANY.
