Australian Rail Track Corporation 2013 Annual Report - page 39

ARTC is committed to protecting the environment in which we
operate by actively managing environmental risks, complying
with our legislative obligations and being responsive to the
different conditions and communities around our network.
manage environmental risks. This includes
identifying and protecting sensitive flora and
fauna or sensitive heritage areas across our
network prior to commencing maintenance or
construction activities.
We are working harder than ever to be more
responsive, considerate and accountable to our
neighbours who live alongside our network.
NOISE
We’re also working harder to respond to
increased community interest in rail noise
– its causes and solutions. In response to
the increased density of housing close to the
rail network and growing concern about rail
noise and wheel squeal, planning guidelines
in some states, now require developments
near major transport routes to consider noise
attenuation in the building design. This is a
common sense approach that recognises the
need for a productive and efficient rail network
that keeps thousands of trucks off the road in
each state.
When concerns about rail noise are raised
we work to examine potential causes which
are generally either due to construction,
maintenance, track issues or noise from
locomotives. When the noise is caused by
the movement of trains we’ll work with
our customers so that they can consider
whether the issue is a result of locomotive
operation or the maintenance of a wagon
or wagons.
