Last year this partnership culminated in
real-time field tests essentially proving
the ATMS concept. The tests showed
ATMS can provide the control, location
accuracy and enforcement confidence to
allow trains to run much closer together
safely with as little as four minutes
between each train.
Thousands of different train authorities were
managed by ATMS, such as proceed, proceed
under restricted conditions and shunt,
and track worker authorities such as track
occupancy, lookout working, local possession
and blocking protection.
In total, the system tested all joint track
occupancies amounting to more than 3000
different combinations.
In May 2013, the Australian Government
announced it would invest $50 million into the
first stage implementation of ATMS between
Port Augusta and Tarcoola in South Australia.
A section of track between Tarcoola and
West Kalgoorlie in Western Australia will be
prepared for ATMS as well.
The network test and trial under full operating
conditions will run for the next three years
before discussions are started with rail
operators and customers elsewhere to
consider further rollout across the Interstate
and Hunter Valley networks.
Rail continues to dominate the land transport
market on the East-West corridor and is
increasingly recognised as key to the solutions
required for the growing freight challenge on
Australia’s east coast.
The safety, capacity and productivity benefits
this system will deliver are nothing short of
game changing and as the custodian of our
nation’s Interstate network, ARTC is excited
for our nation’s freight future.
