Derailment North of Benalla

At 2050hrs last night a freight train derailed 8km north of Benalla between Benalla and Glenrowan in Victoria.

12 of the rear wagons of the 800m train have been confirmed as being derailed with 9 wagons on their side on the east side of the standard gauge track.

None of the three locomotives were derailed.

It is estimated that around 1000m of track has been damaged with rail and timber sleepers affected.

The standard gauge rail has twisted and is fouling the broad gauge track along with some of the derailed wagons.

ARTC management is on site and will work expeditiously to assess what recovery work is needed and when that work can commence.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau is also on site and no recovery can take place until their investigation is complete.

ARTC will also undertake an investigation as to how this derailment occurred.

A further update will be provided later in the day.
