The rail line between Sydney and Melbourne has been reopened following repair and recovery work on the section of rail 8km north of Benalla Victoria.
Repair crews coordinated by the Australian Rail Track Corporation worked non-stop in split shifts over the weekend so that the rail link could be opened at 9:50pm yesterday evening.
A temporary speed restriction of 30km/h has been placed on the section of rail that was repaired.
Background
At 8:50pm on Thursday 31st July, 12 of the rear wagons of an 800m freight train travelling to Melbourne were derailed with 9 wagons on their side on the east side of the standard gauge track.
None of the three locomotives were derailed.
The standard gauge rail twisted and fouled the broad gauge track along with some of the derailed wagons.
