Re-Railing Commences on Hunter Valley Line

As part of the ongoing investment in supporting the Hunter Valley Coal industry, Australian Rail Track Corporation has commenced a rail replacement programme on the Hunter Valley rail lines between Murulla and Kankool.

The existing 53kg/m rail in selected track sections will be replaced with brand new 60kg/m Head Hardened rails.

The purpose of rail replacement is to increase the overall efficiency and reliability of the track structure.  This will also result in increased rail safety.

Replacing the rail will also maintain the capacity on the Hunter Valley rail corridor, as the new rail will reduce maintenance requirements.

The new rail will also mean a smoother ride for Country Link passengers travelling on the line.

ARTC Acting Chief Executive Officer Wayne James said that this type of maintenance was part of the overall commitment to deliver a reliable and efficient rail asset to the Hunter Valley.

“We know that demand for Hunter Valley Coal is set to double by 2012.  The continued investment in rail infrastructure on the Hunter Valley corridor is part of ARTC’s strategy to keep ahead of future market demands,” Mr James said.
