Road users are advised Australian Rail Track Corporation will complete a safety upgrade of the Harefield Road level crossing at Harefield, between Junee and Wagga Wagga on 5-6 September, 2020.
Crews will carry out installation of high intensity LED flashing lights and retro-reflective boom gates over the weekend, with works on the crossing set to be finalised by 5pm on Sunday 6 September.
ARTC’s General Manager Asset Management Brian Green said the upgrade is being carried out to improve safety for light and heavy vehicle users.
“The level crossing at Harefield is being upgraded to improve safety for the roughly 300 road users including up to 50 heavy vehicles accessing this crossing each day,” Mr Green said.
“The Transport for NSW Level Crossing Improvement Program is investing $688,000 into the project being delivered by Wabtec on behalf of the Australian Rail Track Corporation.
“We thank motorists for their patience as this safety upgrade work is carried out with changed traffic conditions including reduced speed limits in place.
“Motorists are also advised should extended work hours be required, changed traffic conditions may remain in place on the following Monday in the event of unforeseen delays.”
Mr Green said ARTC rescheduled the level crossing upgrade work from June due to operational issues.
“During the course of pre commissioning work, a more extensive impact on the operational network was identified and work was delayed to allow further planning work to occur,” Mr Green said.
“With trains not running during the upcoming Southern NSW rail maintenance shut down, final commissioning can now be carried out.”
Locations for level crossing upgrades funded by the Transport for NSW Level Crossing Improvement Program are identified through a risk-based, prioritised ranking approach using the Australian Level Crossing Assessment Model, a review of level crossings incident data and consultation with road and rail infrastructure managers and other relevant stakeholders.
