Statement on train derailment north of Port Pirie, South Australia

Statement attributable to an ARTC spokesperson:

The Australian Rail Track Corporation has reopened the East West rail corridor following the completion of restoration works associated with Tuesday’s train derailment north of Port Pirie, South Australia.

It enables all services to recommence from Sydney to Perth, Melbourne to Perth and Adeliade to Darwin.

This completes a 97-hour complex operation to recover the derailed wagons and restore the track, while working in challenging weather conditions.

The cause of the derailment is under investigation, and ARTC will continue to work closely with the train operator and the Office of the National Rail Safety Regulator.

ARTC wishes to extend its sincere thanks to Aurizon, who supported with additional equipment and crews throughout the operation.
