The first revenue containerised freight service, operated by Aurizon, has accessed the new Moorebank Interstate Terminal, marking a significant milestone in building a resilient, efficient, and sustainable national supply chain.
As Australia’s first major metropolitan independent interstate terminal, it aims to shift freight from road to rail, reducing road congestion and emissions, and improving supply chain reliability.
Officially opened in April 2024, the terminal in south-west Sydney is configured with four 900m tracks, capable of processing 250,000 20-foot cargo crates a year, and can handle 1,800m long freight trains.
“This milestone marks the beginning of a new era for Australian freight logistics – one that’s more connected, more efficient and more sustainable,” said Jade Hooper, ARTC Group Executive Development.
“The inaugural service demonstrates the growing momentum behind Moorebank as a key enabler of more sustainable, efficient freight movements across the country. Congratulations to everyone involved – and here’s to many more trains to come!”
Future expansion of the terminal includes eight more 900m tracks, gantry cranes, and capacity to process 500,000 20-foot cargo crates a year.
