We won! ARTC brought home two blue ribbons from the Permanent Way Institution (PWI) NSW 2024 Awards – the Alan Barham Maintenance Award for pride in maintenance, and the Ken Erickson Innovation Award.
We received the Innovation Award, which recognises technological improvements in the rail industry, for our Proactive GIJ (Glued Insulated Joint) Failure Management Project, which uses machine learning and our Decision Support Platform to improve GIJ outcomes.
Zane Sell, Maintenance Manager Hunter Valley, said the GIJ failure detection work is groundbreaking.
“By deploying state-of-the-art machine learning models and utilising data collected from instrumented coal wagons, the Reliability team has developed a scalable, reliable and highly accurate solution to identify high-risk GIJs,” he said. “This has resulted in a significant reduction in GIJ failures, contributing to improved reliability performance. A huge thanks to the Reliability team.”
The Alan Barham Maintenance Award, which went to our Port Waratah PC, recognises excellence in leadership, compliance and productivity through team engagement, commitment, safety, compliance and strategic planning.
“The Port Waratah team has undergone a large cultural change over the past few years, especially regarding process discipline,” said Zane. “This award recognises achievement in their journey to improve safety, reliability and the condition of the railway.”
