Talking safety in schools

ARTC team members have been spreading rail safety messages in local schools across the country. Here’s a snapshot of recent visits…

Mitch Sweeney, Delivery Support Manager at Network Control Centre South, said around 100 kids attended sessions conducted by the NCCS team at St Joseph’s Primary and Junee North Public School in NSW: “Our core message was that although the students are young, they may be able to teach their parents or other adults about rail safety messages following our visits,” he said.

Justine McDevitt, Principal of Junee North Public School, added: “The students were super interested and keen with the discussion. The teaching of rail safety continued in the classroom for some time after.”

Tara O’Reilly, Property Officer Hunter Valley, organised a talk at Cardiff North Public School and said it was fantastic: “The kids were so engaged and had so many questions,” she said. “The most common was ‘why does it take a freight train so long to stop?’ – they wanted to know why they can’t just get better brakes! It was a great experience and the kids really enjoyed the video.”

Our teams have also conducted recent visits to Seacliff Primary School (SA), St James’ Primary School Kotara South (NSW), Metford Public School (NSW) and Narrandera East Infants School (NSW).
