School’s back – keep kids rail safe

Teaching road safety to kids is second nature, but how often do you talk about rail safety?

As the school year begins, why not take a few moments to remind your children, grandchildren, nieces or nephews how to stay safe when walking or riding near the rail corridor and when using a level crossing.

Here’s what they need to know to be safe:

  • Be aware of your surroundings – stay off your phone when walking near or across railways.
  • Look and listen for trains when approaching level crossings.
  • Look for signals and signs at level crossings so you know what to expect and what to do when a train is approaching.
  • Trains always have the right of way and cannot swerve or stop quickly.
  • Some trains need more than 1.5km before they can stop.
  • The rail corridor is a restricted area and should be treated with the same care and respect as a construction or demolition site.
  • Only cross at designated crossings, even if the rail corridor is unfenced.

The TrackSAFE Foundation has also created some fun safety videos for primary school kids, including the one below.
