Our rail network between Sydney and Melbourne has been significantly bolstered following a successful ‘super possession’ from 22-24 March.
The shutdown included a host of essential maintenance and improvement works between:
- Enfield West and Moss Vale (NSW)
- Moss Vale and Goulburn (NSW)
- Goulburn and Cootamundra (NSW)
- Cootamundra and Tottenham (VIC) and Goobang Junction (NSW).
During the three-day possession, frontline teams completed works across 157 sites including:
- 95,000m of resurfacing
- 21.5km of rerailing across 18 locations
- 4,900m of track sledding
- 1,060m of track reconditioning across five sites
- 950m of undercutting
- 160 transoms replaced
- Installation of concrete bearer turnouts at Cootamundra and Junee.
Inland Rail also carried out construction at several sites during the possession, including the removal of the Docker Street pedestrian bridge near Wangaratta station (following the opening of a new station underpass), improvements at the Birkett Street level crossing in Euroa, and early groundworks at Benalla, Euroa, Tallarook, Seymour, Wandong and Broadford.
In addition, works were undertaken as part of our Southern Highlands Overtaking Opportunities project, including the installation of four new crossovers at Werai in preparation for commissioning in September, and track reconditioning works at Joppa Junction, as well as installation of signalling infrastructure at both locations.
