Investigation works start for $235 million North East Rail Line Upgrade

Investigation work is already underway on the North East Rail Line Upgrade with contractors John Holland commencing site assessments along the entire length of track to be upgraded. Findings will be used to understand how we can minimise impacts to the community.

Ninety kilometres of detailed site walks have been completed to date by main works contractor John Holland in conjunction with ARTC project staff. A team of up to five people will be walking all 500 kilometres of track by mid-January in preparation for the major works commencement in the new year. The team started at Albury and will walk south towards Melbourne.

In addition to the site investigations, targeted early works continue along the line with work since October including:

* Two tamping machines having completed 85 kilometres of tamping
* Full renewal of both tracks at Summers Road level crossing, Springhurst
* Over two kilometres of mudholes removed
* 6,500 tonnes of fresh ballast distributed

“With our main works contractor in place, progress on the track upgrade will start to ramp up in the new year,” said Ed Walker, Australian Rail Track Corporation’s General Manager for Victoria Projects.

“Not only will people start to see increased activity in the rail corridor, but also John Holland and ARTC personnel out and about in local towns and businesses.”
