Contractor program boosts rail worker safety

ARTC is pleased to work with contractors who share our commitment to rail safety, which has never been more evident than during the recent rollout of our new Contractor Safety Management Program (CSMP).

Contractors make an enormous contribution to our business, working with us to progress major construction and maintenance projects across Australia that facilitate more freight on rail. So we’re delighted to now have a dedicated program for our contractor managers designed to reduce the risk of injury on worksites across our network.

“We knew we had to do more to improve contractor safety, so we analysed our processes and procedures to better understand pressure points of different teams, and to identify gaps in skills, knowledge, systems and training, so that our people are better set up for success,” said ARTC’s James Kennedy, who led the CSMP team.

“The program we subsequently developed in conjunction with Area9 Lyceum AI Learning includes adaptive e-learning tailored for individuals, as well as face-to-face workshops to promote safer workplace behaviours and to encourage personal commitments to safety.

“It has immediately helped reduce the number of incidents and injuries we’re seeing on our network, and significantly improved the way we work with contractors. This is due to greater consistency in terms of the expectations we have for our people and contractors across our national network, and a much better understanding of the systems and processes that everyone needs to follow to stay safe when working inside and outside the rail corridor.”

Such has been the early success of our CSMP that it recently won the “Safety Program Award” at the 2023 Inside Construction Foundation Awards (see image below).
